Why Students Should Stay Active

As students, we try to do it all, but often fall short in some categories. Between early morning classes, late night studying, and attempting to have a social life, staying fit slowly gets pushed to the bottom of our to-do list. Understandably, when trying to manage a busy schedule and running on very little sleep, getting a workout in seams like a daunting task.
This week's focus has been staying active and the importance of fitness in our routines as college students. Fitness isn't just about the way you look or gaining muscle but ultimately moving your body for your overall health and well-being.
When staying active regularly, there have been studies that show more blood flow to the brain which improves your focus and memory. Something as small as daily walks can benefit your study tactics in the long run, especially before big tests. As school can become very overwhelming and stressful, movement is an effective way to manage those levels. Finding just thirty minutes to an hour to disconnect from academic material and reset can help prevent burning out.
The idea of going to the gym, especially during peak hours, when it's crowded can feel very overwhelming for most students. I recommend starting off small if this is a worry of yours. Taking a walk around campus or hiking Kennesaw Mountain is a good start to get your steps in. On campus, the KSU rec center offers a variety of options to keep you moving. With a variety of options between weights, treadmills, and machines, you can find just about anything you're looking for to workout.
Pro Tip: Don’t waste your money on a gym membership off campus, access to the rec center and group fitness classes are included in our student fees! Download the KSU Sports Rec app today!
If you're anything like me, the group fitness classes are where you might thrive. The class schedule can be found on OwlFit with a variety of different classes offered each semester.
If you're looking for something more chill, there's yoga and pilates classes that still get you moving. These classes are my personal favorite as I feel more relaxed and focused after taking them. Looking for a higher energy class? Try HIIT and boot camp classes where you will feel the burn in just forty-five minutes. Another great option is cycling and Zumba classes. These energy packed classes make you feel like you are hanging out with friends to some party music.
The community within all of these classes will lift your energy and make you feel so much better than when you walked through the door. Some classes you do have to sign up for ahead of time, so make sure to check the portal if you're interested.
Let us know how you plan to stay active throughout the semester!
